Things You Need to Know About Delta-8 Tetrahydrocannabinol

Delta-8 THC is one among over 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis plants concentrated amounts of delta-8 THC are often made from cannabidiol (CBD) extracted from hemp.

Consumers need to know that delta-8 THC has not been approved for safe use by the FDA. They can be sold in ways that could pose a danger to public health. Children and pets should not be exposed to them.

Here are 5 facts you need to know about delta-8 cannabis THC. These will help keep you and others safe from potentially dangerous products.

1. Delta 8 THC For Sale Products, Which Have Not Been Approved Or Evaluated By FDA For Safe Usage, May Be Marketed In A Way That Puts The Public’s Health At Risk.

The FDA is aware the FDA has raised concerns about THC products containing delta-8. FDA has not reviewed or approved these products for safe usage in any circumstance. Concerns include product labeling and product formulations being inconsistent. There may also be another cannabinoid/terpene content and different delta-8 THC concentrations. These products might be called “hemp products,” misleading consumers who associate “hemp” with “non-psychoactive.” Additionally, there is a growing number of products containing delta-8 THC that are being sold for therapeutic or medicinal purposes. Unapproved products that claim to have therapeutic benefits are illegal and can pose a danger to consumers. The deceptive marketing and sale of unproven therapies raise serious concerns about public health because patients and others could choose them over approved treatments for serious and fatal diseases.

2. FDA Has Received Adverse Reaction Reports From Products Containing Delta-8 THC.

From December 2020 to July 20,21, FDA received adverse event reporting from consumers and law enforcement. The reports included 22 patients who ingested delta-8 THC products. Fourteen of these patients presented to the hospital or emergency department for treatment. 19 patients had adverse reactions after ingesting delta-8 THC products (e.g. brownies or gummies) in their diet. Other adverse effects included nausea, vomiting, difficulty standing, and loss of consciousness.

3. Delta-8 THC Has Both Psychoactive Effects And Intoxicating Ones.

Delta-8 THC can cause psychoactive and intoxicating effects that are similar to delta-9 CBD (i.e., the party responsible for the “high” experienced by cannabis users). FDA is aware media reports that delta-8 cannabis products get people “high.” FDA is also concerned that delta-8 marijuana products could expose them to more THC than are found naturally in hemp extracts. This is why it is not possible to rely on the history of cannabis for determining safety.

4. Delta-8 THC Products Are Often Made With Potentially Hazardous Chemicals To Achieve The Levels Of THC Claimed On The Market.

To create delta-8 THC via chemical synthesis, some manufacturers may use potentially harmful household chemicals. To alter the final product’s appearance, additional chemicals could be used. Due to the chemicals used in the process of making delta-8 THC, there may be harmful by-products or contaminants in the final product. It is also possible that other potential contaminants could be present or manufactured depending on how the raw material was prepared. These chemicals, including those used to synthesize delta-8THC and by-products from synthesis, can prove harmful if they are consumed or inhaled.

Production of delta-8-THC products may be uncontrolled or in unsafe environments, which could lead to dangerous chemicals or other potentially harmful substances.

5. Delta-8 THC Products Are Not Recommended For Children Or Pets.

These products can be labeled and packaged in appealing ways by manufacturers (gummies, cookies, chocolates, etc.). These products are available online and at many retailers such as convenience stores or gas stations. As mentioned above, poison control center alerts have been issued in numerous cases involving children who were exposed to products containing delta-8 THC. In addition, animal poison control centers have reported an overall increase in pets accidentally exposed to these products.
